Yohji Yamamoto, a leading figure in Japanese fashion during the 1980s and 1990s, continued to make an impact well into the new millennium. However, in October 2009, his company, Yamamoto Inc., declared bankruptcy due to a series of unsuccessful investments. Despite this setback, the designer wasted no time in establishing a new business and completely reevaluating his direction by the end of the year. It was during this time of transition that the autobiography, "My Dear Bomb," was born as a result. Co-written with Ai Mitsuda, the autobiography is a carefully and beautifully written piece that seamlessly weaves together extended reflections on both clothing and life with Yamamoto's personal memories and anecdotes, all presented in short, concise paragraphs. While reading the book, we get a glimpse of Yamamoto as a tough realist who does not shy away from expressing his true nature ("I am, in fact, a man who may turn heartless in an instant; I desire only to settle each and every score immediately"). Additionally, we also see him as the great designer that he is, possessing an unmatched instinct for his materials ("how does the cloth want to drape, to sway, to fall? If one keeps these things in mind and looks very carefully, the fabric itself begins to speak"). The autobiography, which includes illustrations by Yamamoto himself, offers a heartfelt and imaginative take on the traditional form of autobiography, much like the designer's fashion creations.
